✮; “It is. I believe further study of your… unique mind would be of considerable benefit not only to the scientific and archaeological community, but also to yourself. I can’t even imagine how that cipher can exist inside your head without causing terrible headaches and visions. You must be remarkably strong-willed, comman—…” The asari halts herself mid-stream when she finally picks up on the not-at-all subtle implication in Shepard’s words and realises that ‘science’ is not at issue here. Her palm shakes a bit as she slowly and befuddledly sets down her datapad. “Goddess. That’s not at all what you meant, is it. I’m sorry, I’m— I’m not at all used to dealing with your species, Shepard.”

At first she was surprised that the asari had chosen to look past the insinuation and continue in the vein of their conversation– until she realized that Liara remained entirely wide of the point, then it merely amused her. She let the other woman speak until she came to the conclusion all on her own, firstly because it was rude to interrupt and secondly because it could be difficult to walk the fine line between flirtation and presumption and she would have hated to offend the scientist. She didn’t want to risk making Liara uncomfortable by being more forward, but at the same time was uncertain how else to get her attention in that way. The problem ultimately resolved itself when the asari puzzled things out on her own.
"Shame, that. We can be awfully nice to deal with, given the right human. I highly recommend those uniquely minded, strong-willed types.” The commander’s gaze made a focused study of the other woman’s facial features. Partly this was because they pleased her, Liara was lovely to look at, but mostly it was to gauge her reaction to the conversation and make sure that she was merely flustered and not uncomfortable or alienated.

Shepard couldn’t help the smirk that crossed her features as the asari scientist nervously tried to explain the nature of her curiosity towards the commander. Her line about being dissected had been a good natured quip, but the frazzled response Liara had to it endeared the woman to her. When she mentioned an in depth study, the smile became a bit more interested. Quirking an eyebrow she leaned slightly forward– not enough to invade the asari’s personal space but enough to make her next words seem much more intimate than the beginning of their conversation. “An in depth study, eh? Well, you know, if it’s for the benefit of science.” It was clear from her body language and facial expression that she was in no way interested in the scientific aspect of a possible relationship.

“Sanity huh? I was starting to think you were running out of that.” Wrex chuckled, he knew Shepard always put her missions before herself, but knowing she was looking to relax actually relieved him. He did endorse a good fight, but a warrior couldn’t fight if he didn’t take care of himself, or herself. “But sure Shepard, if you want to spend your down time perfecting your headbutting technique, I won’t say no to helping.” Plus he would have a good excuse as to why he didn’t exactly get much work done today.

She smiled slightly. “Well, look at it this way: everyone knows you served with me, so if ever there comes a time when I need to give some sod a proper headbutting, you never have to worry that my lack of experience will reflect poorly on you.” She grinned and blinked eyelashes at the krogan, which she knew would only make him shake his head at her. “I’m just saying that this way you won’t have the need to defend your reputation in the headbutting community, as it were.”

He was angry, Shepard was right though, he needed to let go of his anger, but how could he? Jacob wanted to let go, he should let go of what his father had done, but those memories will always be there. What those people had gone through, and what they will never get back. He sighed, nodding his head. “You’re right Shepard. I need to just push pass what happened.” he paused looking back at the closed terminal. “I buried the man I called father years ago, those memories I’ll keep. That other man, he’ll rot for years with what he’s done.” Jacob felt a bit better talking to the commander, her words helped a bit, but it would still take time. “Did you need anything else Commander?”

She shook her head to indicate that she didn’t need anything, thinking that it was best to give him his space if he wanted to be alone. She took a step backwards but hesitated to turn away from him. “Ah, fuck it. You want to get trashed and pretend the punching bag down in the gym is our dysfunctional parent figure? I mean, we could go the healthier way and write letters about our feelings that we don’t intend to post, but my way is much more fun. And there’s rum.” She tilted her head to one side and offered a smile, eyebrows raised in anticipation of his response.

“Course you don’t. You and I, we’ve got warrior’s blood running through our veins. We live for the fight.” Wrex could tell from the day he met her. He wouldn’t have been so compelled to join her on her mission to track down Saren if he had thought otherwise. What he didn’t expect, was that Shepard would become the greatest friend and ally he’s had in his life. He shook his head, he must really be getting old to be getting so sentimental. “I’m fighting a different fight now.” He sighed. “Amen to that.” Wrex laughed, amused by her teasing. “I just hope those robes compliment my figure.”
“You’re right, it’s not a race. But if it were, you’d lose plain and simple.” He simply stated before starting to work on his next glass. “I’m just a little disappointed to see you cutting yourself off so soon. Mostly because I want to see you actually get shitfaced for once.” He could understand why she stopped. It wasn’t the best time to get plastered, in the middle of a war with the fate of the galaxy depending on her, but he still wanted to see it anyway.
Wrex turned his body to face Shepard, leaning himself against the counter and using it to support a good chunk of his weight. “Now don’t get me wrong, krogan sex is the best in the galaxy, hands down, but that’s not what I was after.” He took another sip of his drink before continuing, “Before I returned to Tuchanka, I put the thought of having a kid out of my mind. The chances were so slim, I saw no point in even trying. But when I went back and became clan chief, I started to consider it. And I thought, why the hell not, it probably won’t happen but if it doesn’t at least I can’t say that I didn’t try. So I tried, and hard.” He looked down at his drink and shook his head. “I think after this one I’m done too, my lips are getting too loose.”

Warrior’s blood, huh? She repeated the sentiment aloud, her tone thoughtful, considerate. She turned the thought over in her mind, reaching absently for a pack of cigarettes and packing them against the palm of her free hand. He was right, since she’d been young she’d always been angry, always been spoiling for a a fight. She peeled off the plastic wrapping and opened the cardboard, pulling out a pale cylinder and placing it between her lips. Maybe it was the way her parents had died, or what happened with her brother, or maybe it was Akuze. Maybe she was mad at the world, or maybe she just never got over the anger stage in the five stages of grief. Whatever it was, she was grateful the alliance had given her something worth fighting for. “That we do, for better or for worse.” She sighed.
He teased her about the drinking as she lit the cigarette and inhaled, keeping an eye out for the bartender who would, no doubt, disapprove. “Well then, I guess I should be glad it isn’t one.” She gave a soft smile and turned her head to exhale so that she wouldn’t blow smoke in his direction. “Yeah? I’m surprised you haven’t seen me shitfaced before. You should be glad you haven’t, there’s generally a lot of off-key singing and declarations of affection before the whole thing descends into an existential crisis.” She lifted her glass in his direction with a grin at that before taking another sip.
Krogan sex was one thing she hadn’t anticipated discussing, but she supposed most people didn’t exactly plan on having these kinds of conversations. She listened to him speak and the subject brought her mind to a familiarly unpleasant topic. “Don’t you worry– and I mean, there was a time when I thought I’d have a few little blue bundles of joy myself but… I mean, don’t you worry for them? For their future? I don’t want my hypothetical daughter to grow up and have to fight like I did. I don’t know, maybe it’s different for you culturally. You value war. Not to say it doesn’t make one understand what’s truly important in life, because it fucking does. I just… ah, fuck, I don’t know.” She sighed and placed the cigarette back in her mouth.

The commander couldn’t sleep. All she could think about was the fact that Liara was down the hallway. It consumed her. Which only pissed her off because she didn’t want to be thinking about the asari. And the level of stress it brought her made it feel like everything was trembling every time she slipped towards unconsciousness– which abruptly woke her with a start and was very disorienting. She hadn’t had Akuze nightmares in a while. That pissed her off, too. Shepard sighed. “Hey, EDI?” She paused to see if the AI was listening. “… What do you do while the crew is sleeping?”
