He was angry, Shepard was right though, he needed to let go of his anger, but how could he? Jacob wanted to let go, he should let go of what his father had done, but those memories will always be there. What those people had gone through, and what they will never get back. He sighed, nodding his head. “You’re right Shepard. I need to just push pass what happened.” he paused looking back at the closed terminal. “I buried the man I called father years ago, those memories I’ll keep. That other man, he’ll rot for years with what he’s done.” Jacob felt a bit better talking to the commander, her words helped a bit, but it would still take time. “Did you need anything else Commander?”

She shook her head to indicate that she didn’t need anything, thinking that it was best to give him his space if he wanted to be alone. She took a step backwards but hesitated to turn away from him. “Ah, fuck it. You want to get trashed and pretend the punching bag down in the gym is our dysfunctional parent figure? I mean, we could go the healthier way and write letters about our feelings that we don’t intend to post, but my way is much more fun. And there’s rum.” She tilted her head to one side and offered a smile, eyebrows raised in anticipation of his response.

Jacob turned from the terminal, arms crossed in front of him. He wasn’t one to receive advice, he was usually the one trying to give it to others. Lifting his shoulders up in a shrug, he nodded his head. “Sure Shepard, I could use some right about now.” The truth was, he needed someone to talk to. The rage, disappointment, and sorrow just swirled around his mind and heart. He was glad the commander was here, he felt like she would be the only one he would be able to understand what he was feeling and the only one to actually be there to listen.

The brunette nodded and looked down at the ground again. “I was angry. For a really long time. I had a right to be, I still do. And sometimes I’m still angry. But… it took me years and years to realize that angry doesn’t get you anywhere. So I’m going to save you some time and tell you what I know: you have every right to be angry. But holding on to that anger is like holding on to a hot coal and expecting your father to get burned. As hard as it is, you’re better off just letting go. There are some people in this world…” She paused and gave a heavy sigh. “They’re just fucked up. And they fuck up everything around them. And I can’t tell you why. It just means we need to be better. People like you and me? Everyone on this ship, really. We tip the scale in the other direction, alright? That’s why I named my widow Kindness, yeah?” Kill them with kindness.

A picture of a happy father and son flashed upon the screen. Jacob stared at the terminal, his eyes filled with so many different emotions. He couldn’t believe that the man he used to call his father had betrayed the Alliance, betrayed humanity. The man he once knew had been dead for ten years, and the man he sent to prison wasn’t someone he knew, no he wasn’t his father anymore. Jacob thought he deserved to be left there to die, but what kind of man would that make him? Looking over his shoulder he sighed. “Yeah. Shepard, thanks again for…for giving me a chance to find out what happened.”

The commander did see the photograph briefly on the screen before looking at Jacob. It felt intrusive to look, had she known it was a family photo he was looking at, she wouldn’t have glanced at the screen at all. She looked at the floor before bringing her eyes up to look at the Cerberus agent. “You know…” She started and then stopped herself. There were things, lessons she’d learned in life, epiphanies she’d had that were hard earned, that she wanted to share with him. That might help him in the unique situation he found himself in. But to tell them would be to share a part of her past she rarely spoke of. In fact, she never spoke of it, if she could help it. The last time she’d spoken about her parents was when she and Liara had killed Benezia. She sighed and tried again. “Can I offer you a piece of unsolicited advice?"

Taylor had been one of the few people on this ship that Shepard felt she could even remotely trust until they started recruiting a combat team. He wasn’t alliance anymore, but he didn’t seem as Cerberus to the core as some other people on her ship did– Miranda especially. The commander had done her absolute best to do right by his father, even though she personally thought the man probably deserved worse than he got. Still, she made sure to find Taylor later, to make sure he was alright with things. “You got a minute to talk?”
