”There was ice cream everywhere. A real mess.” she laughed a little as she placed her own make on her face. The electric blue sockets of her mask glowed in the dark shuttle. Why they where there on her mask, she hadn’t the slightest of ideas. She didn’t design  the fury mask, she just wore it.

The Commanding officer looked between his men quickly, “Alright , you all know the mission. Get the status of the colony and then high tail it back to base. Understood.” the whole shuttle seemed to go yes sir in unison. Military life was still an oddity to Teddy.

Shepard was barely paying attention after Teddy’s ice cream comment. She smiled at the girl, though she probably couldn’t see it under her helmet. The she set about checking and rechecking her Mantis.

The light began to flash as the ramp extended down from the underbelly of the ship and the unit began to descend. The first thing she noticed was the lack of sound. There was silence, no hustle and bustle, just the dull buzzing of flood lights– one of which had been knocked over and smashed into the floor. Huh. That was a cement flood light. Knocked over. Shepard blinked and walked past it. She wanted to get to higher ground, her specialty was as a marksman, being here with the ground troops did no one any good if there was a threat. The group was already spreading out.

ltashleywilliams:

‘I was just trying to smell more- appealing ma’am.’ She laughed, eyes squinting from the light of the ship. She sat at a nearby table, letting out a miserable groan. Ash drink to forget, but sometimes waking up to the aftermath wasn’t worth it. ‘I’m sure your cooking isn’t that bad Shepard- and if it is I’ll be sure to throw it up again.’

Shepard cast a smile over one shoulder. “Much appreciated, I’ll do my best.” She sprayed down the pan with something that looked like cooking oil but she couldn’t really be sure, then went into the fridge to consider their options. Dextro eggs were not appetizing to look at, but that was likely because she’d grown up on Earth eating entirely traditional human foods. She had branched out a bit since joining the alliance, but not enough that green spongey eggs looked appetizing. “If it’s really all that bad, I might be right there with you, Williams.”

the  professor

dr-mordin:

After a few seconds, Mordin recognized his Commander’s voice as separate from his own mumblings and thoughts, and said to her with a surprised expression: “Oh, commander. Greetings. Was just killing time, really. No real importance.”. He paused awkwardly for a few seconds, before realizing her point. “Clinic on Omega! Ah yes. Not my favorite project. Nothing but surgery and basic medicine. Also, remarkably easy to cure. Only problem was resource procurement.”

He wandered towards the other end of the room, lost in thought. “Of course, met a few friends. You included. Also Daniel, my assistant. Plague victims came to respect me. Enjoy appreciation for work. Most other projects were secret or very minor. But don’t see it as honorable. See it as simply a necessity. Duty, if you will. Any medical professional would do the same. Disease needs curing, have to cure disease. Simply what I’m good at. Also good at defeating collectors. So must help defeat collectors. See my point?” Mordin stopped his aimless wandering and looked at Shepard with curiosity in his eyes.

The commander nodded. It seemed the professor had a sense of moral obligation but preferred a challenge. And he hadn’t considered the plague a challenge. That was interesting. When people called him brilliant, they weren’t kidding. Then again, that wasn’t just the opinion of the common man, Cerberus had hand-picked him, and they didn’t mess around when it came to personnel.

It was also interesting to her that he referred to her as a friend. Probably because she’d saved Daniel’s life. Most people in her line of work would have considered her an ally first and maybe a friend later. It must be an occupational hazard that Shepard thought that way, too. But it made her smile nonetheless. So did his line of thought regarding duty and how it applied both to the plague on Omega as well as his current work to stop the Collectors. “I do see your point, but I don’t think it precludes mine. It is noble to feel a sense of duty towards the well being of others, nobler still to act on that sense.” Her smile had muted some in the explanation, but it was still there. She met the salarian’s gaze and held it.
