awakening

Gazing would be the wrong term. Yet, so wouldn’t glaring. Perhaps scrutinizing was the most appropriate term for how the Commander was staring her down. It was humorous, and she was certain for the rest of this mission it would be a common trend among the crew. Finally Shepard spoke up. “I know everything about you, doesn’t mean I actually know you. Nevermind the fact that you’re still an unknown, having been rebuilt into a living being,” She said, looking the woman in the eye. “I’d be lying if I said I knew you were one hundred percent your old self; mentally of course.”

It was probably the incredibly direct eye contact that provoked her. Shepard lifted her chin, leaning into the other woman in such a way as to bring how closely they were standing to one another to mind. “Everything?” The one word wasn’t just a question– it was a challenge. One made with a clearly sexual intensity, though the commander had no intentions of following through with the promise her body language made. As attractive as Miranda was, the woman was probably engineered to be that way by Cerberus. They always said the devil was the most beautiful of God’s creations. Not that she believed in either, but the metaphor was fitting and rather convenient. Shepard leaned back on her heel, putting distance between them and giving the other woman a smile. “Come on then, we’ve got a colony to inspect.”

Uh oh, she exclaims mentally, the smiling running away from her face like it’s off to do a 10K marathon. Did I upset her? I think I upset her. Of course she’s completely clueless as to how— Kelly has only ever seen the good side of Cerberus, bathed in glowing propaganda light beams. “I’m sorry, commander. Did I cross a line?”

Shepard cleared her throat and shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She wasn’t entirely sure how to handle this situation. “Ms. Chambers, did you know that during World War II there were people living in Poland with death camps in their back yards who had no idea that it wasn’t snow falling from the sky, but the ashes of burning bodies? The American soldiers who freed the victims from those camps brought the neighbors in so that they could see what atrocities they’d allowed to happen, completely unhindered. You know, I hear Akuze is absolutely lovely this time of year.” It wasn’t like she was giving away some great secret. The fact that Shepard was the sole survivor of Akuze was probably in her file.
